Jonathan Kelsey Shoes for the Girly Girl in You

Getting ready for Valentine’s Day? Hot date with your special someone? Hitting the town to prove that you’re single and fabulous? Well, either way, you might want to sport a pair of shoes from English designer Jonathan Kelsey. They’re now available at Saks, and they’re full of delightfully chic and girly colors and materials.

To wit, these coquettish gray ankle-strap sandals that play a flirty game of peep-toe peek-a-boo.

Or how about these copper colored t-straps that’ll put your feet on come hither display in a little cage of suede and metallic leather.

And for an edgier take on holiday-appropriate accessorizing, try these strappy pink open toe pumps. They’re a little bit bondage with that 4 1/2″ heel and all the straps and strategic cut-outs. Who knows, perhaps they’ll end the night on your boudoir floor.

If you don’t want to torture your feet all night in heels, or if you want something a bit more demure, take these pink-gold slingbacks out for a spin and see what classy people end up looking your way.

Top Five Fall Fashions

As much as I love flip-flops, sun dresses and shorts, the fall fashion season is one of my favorites. From thin sweaters to loose scarves and boots worn with shorts, fall fashion in New York is learning how to layer fashion from every season. After picking up the 840-page September Vogue (check out New York Times review of the magazine here) and scouring the websites for the "top looks," I've decided these are the five fall trends I'll be following.

    1. Sweaters are always a necessity for the cold weather, but chunky knits will be big this fall. Pick up a sweater coat like this one (photo, above left) by Richard Chai at TSE Cashmere.

    2. Things are suiting up this fall. Pick up a traditional tailored suit or a relaxed knit ensemble like this one (photo, above center) from Nina Ricci.

    3. Gray is everywhere next season, in every shade or form. This gray Neil Barrett coat (photo, above right) would be a wonderful addition to any wardrobe.

    4. Add a bit of detail to your clothes this Fall by picking up something with embroidery or sequins, or by exploring a bold or colorful print. This Chole dress (photo, above left) has just the right amount detail to stand out.

    5. Don't bother with an elaborate hair-do this fall, it's all about hats! Pick up something small and shinny with feathers for the evening or a simple knit beret like this one (photo, bottom left) from Marc by Marc Jacobs for the day.

The Fashion World In Shades of Gray

Gray: The color of sadness, the color of rainy days and now, the color of sophisticated style. This year the fashion world is seeing shades of gray and lots of it. Black will always be a fall staple of course, but lately we rely on a less severe version of the classic.

Gray has been a very refreshing color this fall because it provides the perfect canvas for bright jewelry, outspoken shoes and funky accessories. One favorite trend rocking the fashion world right now is the gray mono chromatic look. It’s slimming, flattering and it has a “cool” element that is both modern and fashion forward.

If one is not careful, wearing gray can be quite dull. It is very important to layer, contrast and accessorize when wearing it. For those who may need a little inspiration for the gray trend this fall, here are some runway photos of designer fashion that just might have you seeing the world through gray colored lenses.

Anna Sui's Fall 2008 Collection included quirky dresses, shiny tights and wide variety of gray, textured fabrics. The way she mixed up different tones of gray here is genius. Sui took a color pallet that is often dull or boring and transformed it into a look that is both interesting and dimensional.

Proenza Schouler is moving down the runway on full throttle and it shows no signs of stopping. In Fall 2008, true to their beloved style, they incorporated masculine shapes with feminine surprises. They master the gray color scheme in this collection by using draping and asymetrical chiffon sashes. Watch carefully because Proenza Schouler shows that the true secret to style is all in the intricate details.

Long live the American style king Michael Kors. If there were to be any master of gray this fall, wouldn't it be him? Four words come to mind as I view this collection: Simple, Chic, Easy Elegance. These monochromatic looks are rich and sophisticated but, the brilliance of it all is the fact that they are so easy to wear.

Everything Gold is New Again!

Have you got gold fever too? It seems that the whole fashion world has come down with this shiny, rich-looking trend and why not? It's fabulous! Gold can heat up your night or doll up you daytime look. When done correctly, gold can be a stylish staple that will complete every girl's wardrobe.

    Gold Trend: Do's & Don'ts
    • Do choose classic pieces to avoid looking tacky. For example, try a fabulous trench coat or tote bag.
    • Don't buy cheap sequin garments. They just look trashy so, cough up a little cash for a quality sequin or beaded piece.
    • Do try mixing up various tones of gold. It adds depth & contrast to your look.
    • Don't make yourself look dated by wearing disco or 80's trends that no longer work.
    • Do bring back vintage or retro pieces if they are classic and chic.
    • Don't wear skin tight gold pants unless you are a pop singer. (Leave this to Beyonce)
    • Do feel free to mix silver & gold pieces together.
    • Don't forget to wear gold with confidence and a smile. (This is a must!)

On the Subject of Rain Boots.....

Buying a pair of shoes is usually such a joyous experience for me. I love to browse, touch, try on and most importantly, bring home new pairs of shoes. The odd thing is, I recently had a shoe shopping experience that made me feel more like I was shopping for car insurance, not a fabulous piece of fashion for my feet. So what could possibly put such a damper on my favorite pass time? The answer is rain boots. Rubbery, floppy, goofy, tacky rain boots!!!

Let me assure you that this purchase was totally out of necessity. Florida girls may not need them but, if you live in a big city, it's a very bad idea too live without them.

So, the only thing left to do was suck it up and buy pair of so called "wellies". The real trouble started when I saw how ridiculous some of the styles were. There are psychedelic prints, skulls, ducks and cute little animals. None of these however, would fit the bill for me. Fashion Gods bless those who it will.

So, for any of you fashion lovers out there who find themselves in the unlucky situation of needed new rain boots, here are some choices that just might NOT make you cringe.

Mulberry Large Soho Bags

Mulberry has a preview of their Spring/Summer 2008 collection online, which has a new bag that I just love. There seems to be a lack of great mid-sized bags. I have the longest list of clutches that I adore and the longest list of large handbags that I yearn for, but the mid-sized bags either look too small, oddly shaped, or just wrong.

My problem is that most large bags that I carry, I use to tote around. I would love a great mid-sized bag to put on my shoulder and actually have it fit and stay there, giving me use of both hands. Mulberry has added a twist on their Bayswater to a smaller version that may be just right.

The Mulberry Large Soho Bags offer a soft scoop shape on this shoulder bag. The front features a large magnetic buckle closure with a tab. Another plus is the adjustable shoulder strap; so add as much or as little slack as you would like. Just like the Mulberry Basywater is available in plain leather and ostrich (seriously stunning purple ostrich!), so is the Soho Bag. They offer a chic coral ostrich Soho Bag which costs approximately $2,928. And in leather, there is both a chocolate and antique gold, costing $1,077.

Romantic Mood

Romantic mood has always been a strong trend in fashion, trying, along the years, on new styles, shapes and silhouettes. This season’s romantic trend has a more dramatic approach. Floral is the new keyword. Huge flower appliqué and print define the new romantic style.

But if dramatic looks is too much for you, there are still lots of ways to wear this trend. Other style features include sheer layers, lace, ruffles and playful frills that send the message: sensual romantic lady. Beautiful girlish dresses, blouses, skirts are my favorite alternative to practical parka dresses and folksy frocks.

The dress is romantic by definition therefore if you want to be more feminine this season wear more dresses. From dreamy flowing maxi dresses with exotic and floral print to short baby doll or Empire line mini dresses, from evening cocktail dresses or floral silk muslins, perfect for summer days, the offer is irresistible.

Polka Dots

It seems like this season is going to be a fun one. The cheerful polka dots pattern is not a retro cliché anymore. Designers made it look modern and fresh for this season.

Now it’s all about contrast and size. The bigger the dots are…the better. They were seen on dresses, skirts and shirts and even on fashion accessories like scarves and hosiery.

But even if this season’s trends allow any colour combination, you should stick to a classy chromatic scheme: white, black, red and purple. That is if you want a polished look instead of a childish one.

sea worthy

Catherine Deneuve made her sole appearance of couture week today, in the front row at Jean Paul Gaultier. "For me, Gaultier is the ideal mélange of fantasy and reality," she said from her perch next to Gilles Dufour, adding that she had not and would not attend other collections.

After the mermaid-inspired show, Inès de la Fressange said that the outfit she could see herself in was "the little black dress with 'scales' in feathers—without hesitation! Although the pajama suit comes in a close second…"

The show received the loudest ovation we've heard all week when the stunning finale number appeared: A model on crutches decorated with shells and coral hobbled out, then unzipped her "tail" (a long, stride-hampering skirt) and continued her walk down the runway.

Prada Fairy Bag

In Milan in September, the Prada runway show was a buzz with Miuccia filling the runway with silk-printed tunics, cropped flared trousers, and nymph and fairy prints. The backdrop looked as if it was from a girls imagination of doodles and drawings while daydreaming. Miuccia’s focus was “about trying to find a new creativity.”

The fairy print is the iconic print for the Spring season and is seen on their handbags, clothing, and even their shoe boxes. The handbag that has our forum buzzing is the Prada Fairy Bag. The Prada Fairies Bag is available in two sizes and is said to be a limited edition.

How limited is yet to be known, but Prada is staying that the boutiques will receive a limited number of the bags and pre-orders are not an option. The smaller version retails for $2290 and the larger for $2490. Call your local Prada boutique to inquire and be put on the wait list.

After showing you two horrible prints/patterns on handbags for Spring, I am ending your week with an absolutely stunning piece. This Prada Bag is majestic and enchanting. The deerskin leather is said to have a slight sparkle to it. This bag is absolutely gorgeous, just takes my breath away!

ANNA SUI

A fashion mash-up artist of boundless enthusiasm, Anna Sui picked Busby Berkeley musicals and Biba as her Spring influences. Mixed together, they produced one of her most dressed-up collections in seasons: all acid-bright sequins, neon prints, and silvery feathers. Adding to the fun was a chorus line of models in short punky wigs or Manic Panic streaks, wearing platform sandals à la Terry de Havilland.

The show began with high-waist shorts and a tie-front blouse topped by a net bolero that evoked Jean Harlow. Next was a glen-plaid jumpsuit worn with a matching jacket and a print top that was pure Barbara Hulanicki. An eclectic parade of nail-head embroidered boleros and bathing suits, color-blocked matte jersey frocks, and striped chiffon onesies followed.

By the end there were showgirl dresses in mesh decorated with metallic paillettes and plumes. If the sheer numbers didn't seem very wearable, Sui balanced them with an extensive array of little silk shirtwaist dresses with puff sleeves and hems ending several sexy inches above the knee. How does it all fit in with the rest of the season? With the seventies quickly becoming a recurrent motif, Sui's show looked on the money.

3 Russian fur designers stretch the imagination

Against frescoes painted over walls and ceilings, the lush furs stood out: an ankle-length sweep of sable, a snug chinchilla jacket with tiny bows, or the ultimate for the baroque Russian surroundings - a gilded and tooled leather coat reversing to golden mink.

As the falling snowflakes embedded Moscow in its long winter, a fur coat might seem a necessity rather than a luxury.

But while three Russian designers unveiled their glamorous wares in a fashion show at the State Historical Museum at Red Square, one of them had a different take.

"My mother couldn't afford a fur coat when I was young - so I don't see it as a necessity for keeping warm, I use it like any other material," said Igor Chapurin, who has used his Russian fashion house to bring creativity to fur.

That concept of stretching the imagination was the subject of the final session of a luxury conference organized by the International Herald Tribune in Moscow last week.

Silvia Venturini Fendi, a scion of the Italian family of fur, explained how she works with Karl Lagerfeld, who has been creative director of Fendi for more than 30 years.

"Karl might be inspired by the pattern of clouds he has seen from an airplane window or by images of a volcano erupting," said Venturini Fendi, explaining that she had childhood memories of her mother, one of the five Fendi sisters, laying out the furs treated to resemble volcanic lava on a table for Lagerfeld's perusal. Although the company was bought by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) and became part of the French luxury group, it retains its experimental attitude to fur.

Russian customers choose the most edgy, daring and exceptional pieces, Venturini Fendi said, whether they are shopping in their own country or in Fendi stores at the Rome home base or in Paris.

Gilles Mendel from J. Mendel of New York is the seventh generation of a family of furriers who emigrated to Paris from Saint Petersburg after the revolution. Mendel opened a store last week on Stoleshnikov Pereulok, home to international brands like Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton.

Mendel said that he, too, treated fur like fabric, making it ultra-light by mixing it with tulle. He offered the most luxurious, glamorous and expensive pieces in his all-white store, from sable coats to chinchilla scarves and knitted sweaters, one with a fair isle pattern in mink. The ritzy Russian crowd scooped up the furs like proverbial hot cakes.

Julien MacDonald, the British designer, claimed that making fur sexy was his secret of success. His aim was to control the volume, giving as an example fur with narrow insert panels of leather to shape a coat at the waist.

"No woman wants to lose her figure in a coat," Macdonald said.

At the fur fashion show, Chapurin's pieces stood out for their modern simplicity: sleek gilets worn over leggings, brief coats and other fur pieces cut on slender lines.

His fellow Russian designers, Ekaterina Akhuzina and Helen Yarmak, took a more lavish approach. Models with scarlet lips and upswept hair sashayed down the stairway as if they owned not only the luxury furs but the grand building itself. Reversible coats, each side as ritzy as the other, were presented with a whirl and a swirl.

The furs all carried the OA "Origin Assured" label, launched by the International Fur Trade Federation to bring transparency to the fur supply chain and reassure customers that fur is coming from countries that work to international standards.

The current favorite fur in Moscow is chinchilla - the perfect silver gray color to wear as a jacket over shimmering party clothes. The fur is light enough in weight to be shrugged over skimpy top and skinny pants, rather than surrendered to the coat check, making it a desirable fashion item.

Manolo Blahnik Spring/Summer 2008

Trust Manolo Blahnik to come up with influences as diverse as the architecture of Istanbul and Finnish Marimekko patterns and translate them into one of his favourite themes from his s/s 2008 collection.

"I had just come back from Turkey, where I was exposed to all this wonderful architecture," says Blahnik - who used the curves on windows of the Hagia Sophia as a starting point for the collection. "Then, I was in Bath, and came across some really fantastic Marimekko prints in this little shop. The two just happened to fall perfectly into place - bizarre as that combination may sound."

Blahnik has always had a fondness for picking up mundane objects and turning them into key elements of his designs. This season, for example, a teaspoon became the basis of a new sole, a nail - one of many considered by the designer - was transformed into a heel of the most elegant proportions - finished off with a metal disc to make it that much more modern.

The collection is designed to highlight several strategic parts of the foot. "I had ankles in mind," says Blahnik, "so there are a lot of shoes that focus on them ... and backs," he adds. "I wanted the shoes to look as good from the back as they do from the front." The result is a collection based on miniscule details that could easily go unnoticed - until one realizes that in fact, it is them that make ankles slimmer, legs longer, and backs a lot sexier.

For the second time, Manolo Blahnik has collaborated with young, British designer Christopher Kane on shoes for his catwalk show. "Working with young designers is always a great experience," says Blahnik of his collaborations with designers, which over the years have included designers as varied as Calvin Klein and John Galliano. "They keep you updated on what's going on, and make you look at things with a fresh eye."

With Kane, Blahnik designed a boot and a shoe - both with a hard-looking, metallic toe-cap - that are already being touted as one of the key shoes of the season.

A meld of London rocker and Paris chic sets stage for Chanel show

The hair was a beehive disintegrating into a haystack. The eyes had a dark, decadent flick of liner. The bag flagged its Cool Britannia connection with a Union Jack pattern.

Was this wild rocker look in honor of Amy Winehouse, she of the updated Brigitte Bardot hairstyle, multi-tattoos and Grammy nominations? Would the troubled but most lauded singer of her generation actually perform on the set Chanel had rigged up for its "Paris-Londres" fashion show last week?

In fact, it was model-turned-rocker Irina Lazareanu, one of Karl Lagerfeld's favorite incarnations of Coco Chanel, who took the microphone, while Sean Lennon and his band created a cacophony of sound.

Yet Amy met Coco in the clothes. They were mostly long and dark, shown with flat shoes but highlighted with Gothic crosses, gilded lace gloves or just a fringed front to a maxi tweed coat to express Winehouse's edgy unraveling.

The details were the story of this bizarre show and the reason why Lagerfeld and his Chanel entourage had hosted a star-studded dinner at London's Nobu restaurant, decorated the city's iconic black cabs with "Chanel" and staged a first big show in England's capital.

The "Métiers d'Art" collection is designed to showcase a collaboration with specialist Paris ateliers dedicated to such haute arts as feather decoration, embroidery, jewels and shoes. Since Chanel acquired these heritage ateliers in 2002, the skills of the seven decorative artists have been shown around the world from Paris to Monte Carlo, New York and Tokyo.

"It is a dream for Chanel to go to London - but I don't come so often because I only go to cities where I work," said Lagerfeld, citing Coco's historic 1920s connections with English style, gleaned from her relationships with "Boy" Capel, who financed the aspiring designer's hat shop in Deauville; and with the Duke of Westminster, who introduced her to the luxury of jewelry and whose sportswear for playing polo inspired the simple Chanel jersey suits that made fashion history.

François Lesage, of the couture embroidery house, and Raymond Massaro, the haute bottier, or custom shoemaker, both had their own English memories. Lesage recalled embroidered dresses for Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth's fashion-conscious sister, who adored Parisian chic but had to conceal her extravagances as she was supposed to support the British dressmakers. Massaro recalled "la grande époque" of shoeing the Duchess of Windsor and the countesses of Bismarck and d'Erlanger.

"The duchess was very rigorous and demanding," Massaro said. "I can see her feet, not too big, slightly deformed because she was so thin, but very elegant in afternoon shoes in two different fabrics."

If any of those royal connections and historical encounters had inspired the show, they were hidden under the big hair and rocker attitude. Yet Lagerfeld had taken over one floor of the auction house of Phillips de Pury near London's Victoria Station, to show what he described as "another royal residence." That meant a series of romantic and mysterious black and white photographs of the Palace of Versailles at its most misty and melancholy, showing Lagerfeld's other skill behind the lens.

The most regal thing about the show were the chairs, designed by Lagerfeld, with a high-rise back topped with a coat hanger, crested with the double "C" Chanel emblem (which some of the naughty guests were unscrewing as a take-home souvenir).

What would clients for this special, out-of-season collection have hung on their chairs? Perhaps the slender gown in the faded gilt of a decaying stately home; or a black satin dress with tucks so tiny that Beatrix Potter's fairy tale "Tailor of Gloucester" might have sewn them.

Or what about the ultimate in laid-back English aristocratic style: the humble cardigan. Except that in the "Paris-Londres" show, that had mutated into an ultrachic, purple-bordered, gilt-buttoned sweater set.

The show could have used some modernist high-tech projections - the techno skills that Prada does so well - to zoom in on the details. A folder of Lagerfeld photographs showed the intense craftsmanship. But as the buried treasures hustled by, it was impossible to gauge how many hours of work had been put in by the "magnificent seven," who include Lemarié, the feather artisan; the costume jeweler Desrues; Goosens, the silversmith; Michel, the milliner, and Guillet, the floral designer.

Clients looking for exceptional pieces will be able to view and purchase this special collection when it goes into Chanel stores in June, as über-high-end prêt-à-porter (at a cost halfway between ready-to-wear and couture).

"It's No Sin to Be Thin"

A new designer denim company has launched catering to slim women with natural waist sizes ranging from 23" to 27". With many American women saying yes to the "super-size", ClubSkinny.com is liberating the lean.

If you are a size 8 now buying a size 4, you likely are fond of today's "vanity sizing". Designers have followed the trend and "up-sized" the measurements for their size charts. Deceptively, our size 8 jeans fit just like the size 4 jeans we purchased yesterday. For most slender women this size tampering has further reduced the availability of well fitting denim.

Yesterday's measurements don't exist on today's charts. If you were a size 0 before you now have to brave society by asking, "Do you have these in a 00?" You could spare yourself the looks of disgust and shop the children's department, but it's tough removing the gems and sparkles.

No stranger to the ridicule of being a size 0, Carrie Ventresca, Co-Founder and President of ClubSkinny Inc., says "Why can't we be proud of our size too? It's no sin to be thin." Collaborating with her husband, Greg Ventresca, Co-Founder and CEO, the couple has designed a premium denim line respecting the market of slim women. Greg emphasizes, "It required countless pattern modifications to retire the industries cookie-cutter fit. We also insist on a domestic product from fabric to finishing."

This innovative line consists of six styles and a variety of unique washes all reflecting artistic design elements. No confusing size 0, 1 or 2, instead five natural waist sizes ranging from 23" to 27". Signature back pockets have been reshaped and strategically positioned to plump. A curvy back yoke rounds instead of flattens.

The waistband has been redesigned to ride higher across the hips to hug, not pucker. Removing the 5th pocket and metal rivets, the front pockets are smooth, not bulky. No detail overlooked, even the side belt loops are sewn at a precise, hip flattering, angle.

Marketing via e-commerce exclusively, ClubSkinny, Inc., t/a ClubSkinny.com, offers free shipping and free returns. The unique fit guide and concierge support make online shopping effortless. Classy styles, designer finishing treatments, and a fresh fit make Clubskinny.com a luxurious denim alternative for the slim woman.

Armani, with attitude

It began with Giorgio Armani's "Rock Symphony" and ended at midnight Wednesday with a barefoot Courtney Love in a Givenchy couture gown belting out "Samantha" until even the wrought iron banisters of the august Paris fashion house were shaking.

So the haute couture autumn/winter season rocked? Not exactly. Although the former model Claudia Schiffer dressed as a "Libertine" as seen through the lens of Karl Lagerfeld - the image unveiled at a party awash in Dom Pérignon Champagne - did suggest the rock-the-baroque scenario of Sofia Coppola's movie "Marie Antoinette."

But parties with a decadent glamour are nothing new for couture, especially in a season with so many landmark celebrations. The surprise was to find a new vision from the maestro of Milan: Armani with attitude.

Citing his muse as David Bowie and switching from beige to shocking pink, Armani Privé challenged pre-conceptions about the designer. And although a lot looked forced (think pink - and more pink) the show had an energy and dynamism you don't get from ladylike couture.

"Soft rock," said Armani. "I thought about the women of today - a lot has changed in the world even for the wealthy. And women who may be old still want to dress young. I am designing for a woman who wants to be assertive."

You would certainly be noticed in a shawl made up of a tangle of pink and blue plumes, a pink feather coat, a bright orange bolero with ballooning, frilled sleeves and what Armani called "crinoline rock." That was a strapless dress with an egg-shaped skirt, split to one side to show off boots and recalling some of Gianni Versace's wilder creations.

But since Armani Privé has built a serious client list, the partygoers did not need to take all the hoopla too seriously. It was as if a rock band in full swing was trying to drown out the bass notes.

But those were there in the collection: a lean tuxedo, fancied up with a shocking pink shirt and one of the crumpled mini fedoras, which had a rakish charm. Then there were the opening daytime outfits that seemed eons away from glam rock, with their small jackets, deep belts and full, girlish skirts. They too came in colors, but including an inky ikat blue.

For those who wanted impeccable evening wear, silver came up as the new neutral shade and the line was slender, nipped in at the waist.

The general feeling was that Armani was testing himself, trying to break out of his own shell, rather than seeing the 60-piece collection as a wild departure from his signature style. Often the funky pieces were accessories: a single fingerless, studded glove; an egg-shaped clutch bag in vivid pink; glitter bootees; and those multicolored shawls that the designer has tinkered with in ready-to-wear.

It didn't make for a cohesive vision. But the front row guest Cate Blanchett got the show.

"It was fanstastic - so rock," she said, picking out for the red carpet a black gown with a swoosh of chartreuse taffeta. "And God is in the details - I loved the shoes."

The Menswear Vest

This is good news for those menswear trend lovers. If, till now, the vest put together a relaxed boyish look, worn with t-shirts and short shorts or with loose shirts and bermudas, this season it’s all about a grown-up look.

Wear the vest with wide-leg or straight-leg pants, a white crisp shirt and a fitted jacket or with a pant suit for a tough business look. You can also opt for a chic equestrian outfit by wearing a leather vest with tight pants and knee high boots.
You can also wear the menswear inspired vest as a single top, teamed with a skirt made from the same fabric.

Are Bermuda shorts still in fashion?

I was more than happy to find out that knee shorts are still in style. Browsing through fall 2007-winter 2008 fashion collections I’ve discovered new stylish combinations. This season though it’s all about fit and a narrower silhouette so you should wear those narrower Bermudas you’ve bought last fall and leave those safari flowing shorts for the next summer season.

How to wear Bermuda shorts this fall: for a more business chic look team them with black tights or sheer hosiery, a turtleneck, a fitted jacket and high heels.
Preppy look is being updated, too: try a belted sweater or cardigan, ankle boots or oxfords and opaque tights. An over sized bag or a smart beret makes for a perfect accessory. Gain a more glamorous look with metallic tops or with a black-on-black outfit.

rainbow collection

Petro Zillia's pink-haired designer, Nony Tochterman, is like the fairy godmother of Los Angeles fashion. Her clothes are playful, feminine, and colorful, and her Spring '08 So L.A. collection closed fashion week with a flurry of rainbow-bright silks and some star wattage: Paris Hilton, who had flown in from the Toronto set of her new movie musical, "Repo! The Genetic Opera!" A longtime fan who wore Petro Zillia upon her release from jail, Hilton sat front-row center in a jade-green satin halter pantsuit as girls with cute Afro puff 'dos and homegirl hoop earrings walked down the runway with actual smiles on their faces.

The other VIP in the house was Tochterman's eight-year-old daughter, Romie, who took a bow with her mother in a custom, one-shouldered purple Petro Zillia dress and afterward pronounced a yellow silk-chiffon ruffled frock and a hot pink jumpsuit as her favorites. Asked where she might wear these pieces, she paused to think and then answered, "You know, probably everywhere I go."

CHANEL IN JEANS

Nuits d'Été, it was called, which gave some clue to at least a few of the dozen or so things that were going on at Chanel. Summer Nights, Grease, fifties Americana? Maybe that would explain the opening of blue-jean everything, from jackets to trenches, wide-leg jeans to dungarees, and, yes, bathing costumes—and then the parade of star prints and red-and-white striped jackets, and the Ronettes singing Be My Baby in the background. Really, though, it looked more as if Karl Lagerfeld had set off with a cry of "Let's see how many trends of the season we can tick off this time."

So, apart from the fifties, and the stripes and the stars (which have been shown elsewhere, but not in the flag sense), Lagerfeld checked off transparency, in the bottom half of organza evening looks; ran exhaustively through the all-in-one, from overalls to silk pajama types to teddies; and also touched on masculine-feminine tailoring, the big shoulder (with a new side-loaded epaulette), ballerina lengths, gold—oh, and soft, thirties circle cutting (actually, he was the first with that one, over at Fendi).

In other words, it was the regular Chanel ready-to-wear tsunami of style, strewn with a plethora of surface devices like grommets and portholes (in a bag) and loaded with pearls, chains, bows, bangles, buttons, and star-strung jewelry.

Though it teetered on the brink of that other Parisian trend, randomness (the one Rei Kawakubo brought up at Comme), Lagerfeld kept the Chanel classics bobbing along on the surface as a lifeline to the elegance-seekers of the world. Some of the jackets—like the multilayered white chiffon—and the simple fitted dresses, with flattering circles of paillettes in the flanks, had the true stamp of the investment about them—the sort of dateless things that transcend any transient trend.

Black magic

Osman Yousefzada has had various labels applied to him: Cambridge-educated-investment-banker-turned-fashion designer, draper extraordinaire, son of an Afghan dressmaker, and new master of the little black dress.

It's this last one that seems like it might stick. Yousefzada's LBDs may look simple from afar, but they're far from simple, featuring architectural construction mixed in with a bit of his signature draping.

The London-based designer's reputation will get another boost when he unveils a capsule collection of 12 little black dresses for Mango in March. When we asked what we should expect from his collaboration with the mass retailer, Yousefzada was firm: "I'm not diluting them at all. They will be very, very Osman."

Real simple

Start the new year with a clean slate: Streamline your accessories. We suggest Slow and Steady Wins the Race's latest projects (numbers 15 and 16, if you're keeping count), shoes and sunglasses. In keeping with designer Mary Ping's stripped down philosophy.

"It's a playful commentary on the fundamentals of clothing design" each item uses only details that are integral to its basic concept to make a statement. So no rhinestones on the shades, though Ping does experiment with a foldable frame by adding a hinge in the middle, and her white canvas pump sports a decorative heel on the toe.

The keep it simple approach is working out. Ping's taking a break from designing her eponymous collection to focus on Slow and Steady.

CHANEL

Karl Lagerfeld’s ability to stretch the template of Chanel this way and that according to the moment never ceases. This season, the block-heeled sixties spectator boot he first showed for couture gave him the starting point to design upward into a young and leggy look.

Let les autres turn to the omnipresent Balenciaga influence; for Lagerfeld, there’s no need to look beyond the Rue Cambon for a reason to make a newly proportioned short tweed suit. Just as it was in the fifties and sixties when Coco competed with Cristobal, now Chanel’s slim coats and jackets, worn with ruffled blouses and jewel-buckled belts, represent the authentically sourced Paris alternative to the oft-quoted architectural volumes of Signor B.

Though it was mainly black, with touches of white, cream, and dull pink, Lagerfeld’s collection didn’t come off as one of the season’s solemn pronouncements on sobriety and restraint. Instead, he worked texture, sparkle, and girlishness into surfaces and styling: He used satin ribbons and bows for hair bands and bodices, raw edgings on hems, and gemstones and crystals set in big brooches or as bejeweled necklines set into evening dresses. As a contemporary twist on the classic Chanel bag he added an oversize unstructured hand-held tote—something like a laundry bag, but in patent leather, with a short chain handle.

As always, the Chanel presentation zipped pell-mell through many options. There were simple sleeveless little black dresses and short redingotes, flared from the waist (the best in plain herringbone tweed). For evening, Lagerfeld checked off more points of the season, from exaggerated puff-sleeves to sixties Edie-ish baby dolls and various renderings of chiffon dresses layered over trousers. Cute and young was the general impression, but—no surprise—Lagerfeld also ensured that classic Chanel’s all-encompassing sweep remained firmly in the mind's eye.

Metallic Heels

Metallics have been a strong trend of late, seen in everything from dresses to bags to belts. Over the past few weeks we've seen a lot of celebrities stepping out in metallic heels, suggesting that the trend is nearing its peak.

The beauty of this trend is its ability to liven up an outfit which might otherwise be rather dull. It's worth remembering not to overdo the trend though and stick to one or two metallic pieces per outfit. There are plenty of designer versions out there at the moment - ranging from platforms to stillettos to wedges, and in both closed-toe and sandal styles.

Clockwise from left: Christian Louboutin Super Metallic Pumps; Miu Miu Bi-colour Metallic Pumps; Marc Jacobs Perspex Heel Slingbacks; Jimmy Choo Hep Platform Sandals; Marc by Marc Jacobs Metallic Bar Sandals; Marni Wooden Block Pumps. All available at Net-a-Porter.

What's your take on the metallic heels trend, and how long do you think it will last?

Sunglasses Trends - Rayban Wayfarers

If you were a fan of Madonna in the 80s, or even better Tom Cruise in Risky Business, then you won't have let the Ray-Bans revival escape you. The classic 'Wayfarer' style sunglasses have again become a celebrity staple, with Sienna Miller, the Olsen Twins, Nicole Ritchie and others regularly stepping out in them.

Though remembered by many younger generations as an 80s icon, the Rayban Wayfarer has a much longer history. Since 1952, they've been immortalised by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, through to Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol and Madonna. Risky Business, with Tom Cruise, revived the dying brand in the 1980s.

Accentuated shoulders as a 2008 fashion trend

Remember those bulky shoulder pads from the 80s? They're back! Well... ok not quite, I'm just trying to scare you. What is making it as as trend in 2008 is accentuated shoulders - but in a much more sculptured, structured way than those 1980's power-suits.

2008's shoulders are accentuated with short sleeves on streamlined cuts creating a more balanced silhouette. Pointed shoulders (like YSL and Fendi, above) add an element of futurism and fantasy to a dress or top, while Balenciaga's rounded shoulders create a look that's football player meets 16th century plate armor, only much daintier of course.

The emphasised shoulders work best when further balanced out by a cinched in waist. It's not for everyone; but for those who dare, confidence is key.

1920s flapper fashion: 2008 trend

Ever since we saw Kate Moss at Glastonbury we were predicting a return of 1920s elements. The flapper trend set in slowly but surely, and the Spring / Summer 2008 runway shows were there to push it along.

Loose-fitting dresses with embellishments like fringing and beading, particularly in vintage styles, will take over from the more mod minis and smocks of the past season. Drop-waists aren't a requirement in 2008, where waists are otherwise emphasised and revered, and the trend will populate into a variety of different fits and cuts.

Flapper fashion sport wearThough the Jazz Age is often thought of alongside parties, dancing and glamour, the sporty aspect will not be forgotten in 2008.

With Coco Chanel originally popularising the tan, the 1920s flapper was fit, healthy and sporty. Think Jordan Baker-esque golfing girls with golden skin and long shorts, or 1920s style tennis-chic.

Wear it with sophistication and flirtatiousness. In 2008, flapper fashion is the cat's pyjamas, darling!
